University of Mary Washington professor Chris Foss will begin by providing some brief background on the history of disability, the disability rights movement, and Disability Studies. With that context in mind, he will focus on highlighting the need for (more and better) literary representations of disability, followed by an accounting of some of his own attempts (as both a teacher and a scholar) to contribute to this important cultural shift.

Accessibility at UUFF
Accessibility at UUFF
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg strives to be a welcoming and accessible community for people of all abilities. Our building is fully accessible, with a wheelchair ramp at the main entrance and a single-story layout that allows easy movement throughout the space.
For those who benefit from hearing support, headphones are available during services. Accessible restrooms and flexible seating options are also available to help ensure comfort and participation for everyone.
We also recognize that people experience worship in different ways. Sensory objects and quiet toys are available at the back of the sanctuary for anyone who may benefit from them. During congregational singing or moments when people are invited to stand, we use the phrase “if you are able,” recognizing that participation looks different for everyone.
If you have specific accessibility needs, we are happy to work with you to make your visit as comfortable as possible. Please feel free to reach out to us in advance or speak with a greeter when you arrive.
